An inquiry has been ordered after former Union minister Smriti Irani’s name was found missing from the panchayat voter list of her village in Amethi
June 12, 2026: Former Union minister Smriti Irani’s name has been omitted from the panchayat voter list of Medan Mawai village in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi district, officials confirmed on Friday. The discrepancy surfaced after the publication of the panchayat voter list on June 10, even though her name continues to appear in the Lok Sabha and Assembly electoral rolls for the area.
Amethi District Magistrate Sanjay Chauhan said an inquiry has been initiated to determine how the omission occurred. Irani, who represented Amethi in the Lok Sabha from 2019 to 2024, had built a residence in Medan Mawai village after her 2019 electoral victory and is registered as a voter there. She had also cast her vote from the village during previous elections.
BJP Amethi district president Sudhanshu Shukla said an application has already been submitted seeking the inclusion of Irani’s name in the panchayat voter list. According to him, local officials have assured that the matter will be resolved after verification. Irani was defeated in the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amethi by Congress leader Kishori Lal Sharma.
