Teacher shifted as police detain suspects and probe vandalism during student agitation
April 14, 2026: A student-led protest in Sopore turned violent on Tuesday, prompting swift action by authorities. The unrest began at Government Higher Secondary School Sopore, where students accused lecturer Ghulam Hassan Mir of inappropriate behaviour and harassment. What started as a peaceful demonstration on April 13 escalated as more students joined, leading to road blockades, slogan shouting, and incidents of vandalism.
Police said at least eight people have been detained for their alleged involvement in damaging public property, while around 25 others have been identified and are under investigation. Sopore Senior Superintendent of Police Iftikhar Talib confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused lecturer based on complaints filed by students. Authorities added that strict action would be taken against those responsible for disrupting public order.
Following the protest, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) transferred the accused teacher from Sopore to a school in Bandipora pending inquiry. Officials have directed that a detailed investigation report be submitted within 15 days, even as efforts continue to restore normalcy in the area.
