Flight delays and diversions hit Indira Gandhi International Airport as heavy rain and winds sweep through Delhi-NCR. Passengers urged to check with airlines

May 02, 2025 | 07:08 AM IST A powerful spell of pre-monsoon rain and thunderstorms disrupted normal life in Delhi-NCR early Friday, severely impacting flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport, the busiest airport in the country.

✈️ Flight Delays & Advisory Issued

  • Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) confirmed that multiple flight operations were affected due to the severe weather.
  • “Some flights have been impacted at Delhi Airport due to thunderstorms,” DIAL said in a post on X at 5:20 AM.
  • Passengers have been advised to check flight status with their respective airlines before heading to the airport.

Meanwhile, Air India posted a travel alert:

“Some of our flights to and from Delhi are being delayed or diverted, which is likely to impact our overall flight schedule. We are doing our best to minimise disruptions.”Air India via X (5:51 AM)

⚠️ Weather Snapshot: May 2

  • Rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds (up to 80 km/h) lashed Delhi early Friday.
  • Waterlogging reported in several areas including Dwarka, Khanpur, South Extension, Lajpat Nagar, Moti Bagh, and Minto Road.
  • Trees uprooted, emergency response teams deployed.

At 5:19 AM, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) posted:

“Severe thunder and lightning with winds of 70–80 km/h are expected over Delhi-NCR in the next two hours.”

The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Delhi through Saturday, forecasting continued thunderstorms and rain.


🌡️ Relief from the Heat

  • The storm brought respite from rising temperatures, with Delhi recording 19.8°C in the early hours.
  • The maximum temperature on Wednesday was 38.1°C, slightly below the seasonal average.
