Thick Fog Envelops Delhi Amid Cold Spell, Wet Weather Expected
New Delhi, January 12: A thick layer of fog blanketed the national capital on Sunday, bringing reduced visibility and plunging temperatures. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 12°C, with a warning of thunderstorms and hail later in the day.
Visuals from iconic landmarks like India Gate showcased near-zero visibility as residents braced themselves against the biting cold.
Amid the cold spell, night shelters across the city provided much-needed refuge to the homeless. At a shelter in Safdarjung, locals praised the efforts of volunteers.
“The people staying here are provided with two meals a day, proper bedding, and blankets. If anyone needs medical attention, we take them to AIIMS nearby,” shared Vegpal Singh, a local volunteer.
The IMD noted light rainfall in the city on January 11, which caused temperatures to dip to 7.7°C. Neighboring regions like Kanpur and Gwalior also experienced dense fog.
In Kanpur, locals lit bonfires to combat the cold. Auto driver Raj Kumar highlighted the challenges of working in freezing temperatures, urging the administration to set up more bonfires at key locations.
“We face difficulty reaching work due to the cold. Bonfires should be placed at roundabouts to help us,” he said.
His colleague, Sunil Kumar Gupta, echoed the sentiment, lamenting the lack of attention from authorities.
While no flights were canceled or diverted at Indira Gandhi International Airport, several trains experienced delays due to the foggy conditions, disrupting travel plans for many.
The IMD has advised residents to prepare for the wet spell expected later in the day, which could worsen visibility and further affect transportation. As Delhi battles the chill, initiatives like night shelters continue to provide critical support to those in need.
