The Supreme Court introduced mandatory virtual hearings and work-from-home arrangements during partial working days
May 15, 2026: The Supreme Court of India on Friday announced a series of fuel conservation measures, including mandatory virtual hearings on Mondays and Fridays during partial working days in June and July, amid growing concerns over rising crude oil prices linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis.
The decision was taken after a full court meeting led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. A circular issued by Supreme Court Secretary General Bharat Parashar stated that all matters listed on miscellaneous days and during partial working days would now be heard exclusively through video conferencing.
The court administration has also been instructed to ensure uninterrupted and stable virtual hearing facilities to avoid inconvenience during proceedings. In addition to online hearings, Supreme Court judges have unanimously agreed to encourage carpooling among themselves to reduce fuel consumption and promote efficient use of resources.
The circular further allowed up to 50 per cent of registry staff in each section to work from home for two days a week. Registrars have been directed to prepare weekly rosters while ensuring that court functioning remains unaffected. Employees working remotely must remain available by phone and report to office whenever required.
The Supreme Court’s move comes amid a wider national push for fuel conservation. Narendra Modi recently urged citizens to reduce fuel consumption, use public transport, adopt carpooling and encourage work-from-home practices wherever possible as global oil prices continue to rise.
India also witnessed its first petrol and diesel price hike in four years on Friday, with fuel prices increased by ₹3 per litre. The country remains heavily dependent on imported crude oil, sourcing more than 80 per cent of its requirements from overseas markets, making it vulnerable to disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
