The Supreme Court refused to restrain Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay from visiting the families of the Karur tragedy victims
July 7, 2026: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) seeking to stop Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay from visiting the families of those killed in the Karur tragedy. The court observed that it would not regulate the activities of an elected chief minister and stressed that political disagreements should be addressed through the political process, not in court.
During the hearing, the Bench said the judiciary could not become a platform for political battles. It told the DMK that if the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was making political statements about the tragedy, the Opposition was free to respond politically instead of seeking judicial intervention. The court rejected the plea, stating that it saw no reason to interfere.
The DMK had argued that the Chief Minister’s proposed visit could influence the investigation into the accident during a TVK rally last year in Karur, which claimed 41 lives. However, the Supreme Court declined to accept the argument. Chief Minister Vijay is now scheduled to visit the victims’ families, where the state government will provide ₹10 lakh compensation to each affected family and offer government jobs as part of the relief package.
