India calls for improved safety measures for its citizens in Canada amidst rising tensions and incidents of violence.
December 14, 2024: India has expressed deep sorrow and concern over the recent murders of three Indian students in Canada, calling them “terrible tragedies.” The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has urged Canadian authorities to ensure the safety of Indian nationals and conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents.
“The safety, security, and welfare of Indian nationals in Canada remains of utmost importance to us,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated during a media briefing. He extended condolences to the victims’ families and confirmed that Indian consulates in Toronto and Vancouver are providing support.

India’s appeal comes at a time of strained relations between the two countries. In recent months, diplomatic tensions have escalated following Canada’s allegations linking Indian diplomats to the murder of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Both nations have since expelled diplomats in a tit-for-tat response, and the security environment for Indian nationals in Canada has reportedly deteriorated.
In response to the rising incidents of violence, India has advised its citizens, particularly students, to exercise caution. Over 400,000 Indian students currently study in Canada, making their safety a pressing concern.

Jaiswal also dismissed Canadian media reports alleging that the Indian High Commission was refusing visas to certain individuals, labeling the claims as “disinformation.” He emphasized India’s sovereign right to issue or deny visas based on national security considerations.
The murders of the three students have added a grim layer to already tense bilateral relations, with New Delhi reiterating its demand for justice and increased measures to protect Indian nationals living in Canada.
