Vijay-led TVK has approached the Supreme Court seeking directions to the Tamil Nadu Governor
May 8, 2026: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has moved the Supreme Court of India seeking directions to Rajendra Arlekar to invite the party to form the government in Tamil Nadu, according to PTI. The petition comes amid an ongoing political deadlock after TVK emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly elections but fell short of the majority mark.
TVK, led by actor-politician Vijay, won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly and has claimed support from several parties and independent legislators. However, Governor Arlekar earlier stated that the “requisite majority support” required for government formation had not been established, leading to criticism from opposition leaders and legal experts.
The matter has triggered a wider political and constitutional debate, with several leaders arguing that the single largest party should be invited first and allowed to prove its majority on the Assembly floor. The Supreme Court petition is expected to intensify the political battle over government formation in Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
