According to NCRB 2024 data, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest conviction rate among major states in crimes against women
May 12, 2026: Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest conviction rate among major Indian states in cases related to crimes against women, according to NCRB 2024 data released recently. The state reported a conviction rate of 76.6 per cent under the Yogi Adityanath government’s “zero tolerance” approach towards crime. The figures were highlighted by Nirbhaya case lawyer and social reformer Seema Kushwaha, who praised the state’s efforts in ensuring faster convictions and stricter law enforcement.
Kushwaha said Uttar Pradesh had emerged as a national benchmark in women’s safety and criminal justice delivery. She credited initiatives such as Anti-Romeo Squads, fast-track special courts, stronger prosecution systems, and increased police accountability for the improved conviction rate. According to NCRB data, Tamil Nadu recorded a conviction rate of 23.4 per cent in crimes against women cases, followed by Punjab at 19 per cent, Kerala at 17 per cent, Telangana at 14.8 per cent, Karnataka at 4.8 per cent, and West Bengal at 1.6 per cent.
The social reformer also urged other states to study Uttar Pradesh’s measures and strengthen their own investigation and judicial systems. She suggested increasing the number of fast-track courts, digital forensic labs, and prosecutor training programmes across the country. The NCRB report has once again drawn attention to the differences in conviction rates among states and the role of efficient investigation and prosecution in ensuring justice for women.
