Anil Agarwal named in FIR after explosion at Vedanta Limited plant kills 20 workers in Chhattisgarh
April 17, 2026: Police have named Anil Agarwal in a First Information Report (FIR) filed in connection with the boiler explosion at a Vedanta Limited power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Singhitara, which claimed 20 lives and left 15 others injured. The FIR also names company manager Devendra Patel and others, with charges under provisions related to causing death by negligence and negligent handling of machinery.
According to police, preliminary technical findings indicate that excessive fuel accumulation inside the boiler furnace led to a dangerous build-up of pressure, triggering the explosion. The conclusions align with a Forensic Science Laboratory report. Authorities further alleged that lapses in maintenance and operational protocols by the company and its subcontractor contributed to the incident.
While Vedanta has not commented on the FIR, it earlier stated that the explosion occurred at a boiler unit involving personnel from its subcontractor, NTPC GE Power Services Limited, and that its priority was to provide medical assistance to those affected. Police said a detailed investigation is ongoing with technical experts, and further legal action will depend on the findings.
