Vijay may take oath at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam seeks allies to form government.

May 5, 2026: Vijay, chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, is likely to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 7. The oath-taking ceremony is expected to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.

TVK has made a stunning debut by emerging as the single-largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, though it remains 10 seats short of the majority mark of 118. The party’s effective strength could dip further as Vijay has won from two constituencies and one MLA will take up the Speaker’s role, making outside support crucial.

To secure a majority, TVK is expected to reach out to parties like Congress, PMK, Left parties, CPI(M), and VCK. The results also dealt a blow to M. K. Stalin of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, who lost his Kolathur seat, while the party’s tally dropped significantly.

Governor Rajendra Arlekar has accepted Stalin’s resignation and asked him to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until a new government is formed. Vijay’s rise signals a major political shift, potentially ending decades of dominance by the DMK and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the state.
