Waris Pathan criticises PM Modi’s address, raises doubts over timing and intent of women’s reservation bill

April 19, 2026: Narendra Modi addressed the nation in a 30-minute speech focusing on the Nari Shakti Vandan Act and criticism of opposition parties, triggering sharp political reactions. Responding to the address, Waris Pathan said he watched only a part of the speech before switching it off, claiming that the BJP’s “countdown has begun.” He remarked that the tone of the Prime Minister suggested pressure on the government and added that he turned to watching IPL midway.

Pathan also raised questions about the timing of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill related to women’s reservation. He pointed out that the bill had been introduced during a special session in 2023 and argued that it should have been implemented in 2024. He further questioned the decision to hold discussions during ongoing elections in states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry, saying leaders should not be called away from campaigning at such a time.

Emphasising his party’s stance, the AIMIM leader said they have always respected women and will continue to do so. He alleged that the government introduced the bill now to mislead the public and claimed that people have understood its intent. Pathan further said that this was the first time in 12 years that such a bill had failed, adding that people expected the Prime Minister to speak about development but instead saw a leadership under pressure amid a stronger opposition.
