Indian National Congress extends conditional support to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam led by Vijay.
May 6, 2026: In a major political shift, the Indian National Congress has ended its decade-long alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and announced support for Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to form the next government in Tamil Nadu.
The Congress said it views the electoral verdict as a mandate for a secular, progressive and welfare-oriented government. The party has formally agreed to back TVK’s bid to form the government, providing a crucial boost as Vijay’s party works to secure a majority.
However, the support comes with a key condition — TVK must not align with “communal forces” that do not adhere to constitutional principles. Congress also indicated that this partnership could extend beyond immediate government formation to future elections, including local body polls, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha contests.
