Authorities probe role of WhatsApp and Instagram in escalating protests as violence spreads and hundreds are detained

April 14, 2026: Violent wage protests in Noida entered their second day, with investigators pointing to a coordinated digital effort behind the unrest. Officials said multiple WhatsApp groups were created overnight, adding workers through QR codes and circulating messages that allegedly incited tensions. Some groups, including one named “Workers’ Movement,” reportedly shared provocative content, while Instagram was also used to sustain mobilisation as the protests intensified.

The demonstrations, triggered by wage disparities linked to a recent hike in Haryana, escalated into large-scale violence involving over 40,000 workers. Key areas such as Phase-2, Sector 63, and Sector 80 witnessed clashes, arson, and stone-pelting, leading to major disruptions. Police responded with heavy deployment, arresting over 300 individuals for offences including vandalism and detaining more than 100 others for questioning.

Authorities also suspect the involvement of “outsiders” in aggravating the situation. Laxmi Singh, Police Commissioner of Gautam Buddh Nagar, said some groups attempted to provoke unrest even after initial protests had subsided. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar termed the incident a “planned conspiracy” and said wider links, including a possible foreign angle, are being examined. The government has urged calm, warning against misinformation and assuring workers that their concerns will be addressed.
