The process to appoint the next chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation is set to gain momentum as a high-powered selection committee meets in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss potential candidates.
The committee, headed by the Prime Minister and comprising the Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India, is expected to deliberate on who will succeed current CBI Director Praveen Sood, whose tenure ends on May 24, 2026. A short extension for continuity remains a possibility.
The CBI Director’s post is considered one of the most powerful positions in India’s investigative framework, overseeing sensitive probes related to corruption, financial fraud, and high-profile criminal cases.
Key Frontrunners For The Top Post
According to sources, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has shortlisted several senior IPS officers from the 1989–1992 batches, all of whom have significant experience in vigilance and anti-corruption roles.
Among the frontrunners is Shatrujit Singh Kapoor (1990 batch, Haryana cadre), currently serving as DG of ITBP. He has previously worked with the CBI and is known for his administrative experience, though his name has also appeared in connection with an FIR in a separate case.
Another strong contender is G.P. Singh (1991 batch, Assam-Meghalaya cadre), currently DG of CRPF. He has earlier served in key positions including IG of NIA and DGP Assam, and is credited with operational leadership in sensitive security assignments.
Officials have also indicated that an extension for the incumbent director, Praveen Sood, remains under consideration as per provisions under the Lokpal and related service rules, which allow limited tenure extensions.
Why The Post Matters
The CBI Director plays a crucial role in deciding the direction of investigations, including whether to file chargesheets or close cases. The position also involves handling politically sensitive and economically significant cases, making it one of the most closely watched appointments in the government system.
The director heads India’s premier investigation agency, coordinates with international bodies like Interpol, and oversees probes into major corruption, banking frauds, and violations involving public sector institutions.
With the selection panel meeting underway, the final decision is expected to shape the leadership of the agency responsible for some of the country’s most high-stakes investigations.
