Tonga Hit by 7.1-Magnitude Earthquake, Tsunami Warning Issued for Pacific Region

The undersea quake struck northeast of Tonga’s main island, prompting warnings of hazardous tsunami waves within 300 km of the epicentre.

March 30, 2025: A powerful 7.1-magnitude undersea earthquake struck northeast of Tonga in the early hours of Monday (local time), triggering a tsunami warning for the Pacific island nation, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake struck approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Tongatapu, Tonga’s main island, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, as confirmed by both the USGS and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

In response, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert stating, “Hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicentre along the coasts of Tonga.”

As of now, no casualties or structural damage have been reported. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have urged residents in coastal areas to stay alert and follow local advisories.

Tonga, a Polynesian archipelago of 171 islands located over 3,500 kilometers east of Australia, is home to around 100,000 residents, the majority of whom live on Tongatapu. The island is known for its picturesque beaches, lush tropical forests, and historical landmarks such as the Ha’amonga ʻa Maui, a coral stone trilithon dating back to the 13th century.
