Gautam Gambhir Breaks Silence on Indian Team Rift Rumours, Leak During Border Gavaskar Trophy

India’s head coach dismisses speculations of discord during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and highlights the team’s bold approach to T20 cricket.

February 4, 2025: Living up to his reputation for speaking his mind, India head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed rumours of a rift within the Indian cricket team during their previous Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour in Australia. Speculations about a lack of alignment between players like Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, and Ajit Agarkar had dominated social media, particularly as the team struggled with defeats. However, Gambhir chose to remain silent at the time.

After leading India to a 4-1 T20I series win against England, Gambhir finally tackled the issue head-on during the post-match presentation in Mumbai. While discussing the matter, Gambhir explained how results often fuel gossip about team dynamics.

“They have played a lot of cricket with each other. More importantly, a month back, there were a couple of other rumours flying around (laughs). That’s what Indian cricket is all about. When results don’t go in your favour, there’s always something being said about the dressing room. But once you start winning, things magically seem to fall into place,” Gambhir remarked.

Interestingly, Gambhir neither confirmed nor denied the rift rumours but instead chose to focus on the volatile nature of narratives surrounding Indian cricket.

High-Risk, High-Reward Approach

Shifting gears, Gambhir elaborated on Team India’s aggressive T20 cricket strategy, which emphasizes a “high-risk, high-reward” style of play. The goal, according to Gambhir, is to regularly target scores in the range of 250-260, even at the cost of occasionally being bowled out for low scores.

Highlighting India’s recent performances, Gambhir pointed to the fourth T20I in Pune, where the team managed to set a challenging target of 181 despite losing wickets, and their formidable 247-run score in the fifth T20I in Mumbai.

“That’s the kind of T20 cricket we want to play. We don’t want to fear losing. We want to play high-risk, high-reward cricket. These guys have embraced this ideology brilliantly,” Gambhir said.

He added, “We are pushing boundaries to consistently post tall scores. Of course, there will be games where we’ll end up with 120-130 trying to achieve it, but that’s what T20 cricket demands. Unless you play bold cricket, you won’t get those big rewards. This approach will be crucial for us in major tournaments.”

Gambhir expressed confidence that this bold strategy would help India succeed in high-stakes tournaments, reiterating his belief that the team is on the right track.
