India captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted her team fell short of expectations and said it was time for a serious “rethink” after Australia eliminated India from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with a six-wicket victory at Lord’s on Sunday.

The defeat ended India’s campaign and confirmed that they would miss out on a place in the tournament’s semi-finals.

Despite scoring a fluent half-century herself, Harmanpreet acknowledged that India failed to deliver when it mattered most.

Harmanpreet: ‘We Didn’t Play to Our Standards’

Reflecting on the disappointing exit, Harmanpreet said India were in the contest for long periods but ultimately failed to match the standards expected of the team.

“Today we were in the game for quite some time but still I think we didn’t play to our standards and as a group we need to rethink about a lot of things,” she said during the post-match presentation.

The skipper believed India managed to post a competitive total but admitted it was not enough against an experienced Australian batting line-up.

“At one stage, I thought we were a little short but in the last over I thought I did the job for us.”

However, she credited Australia’s disciplined bowling and admitted India struggled throughout the tournament against stronger opposition.

“We didn’t play well. Australia bowled well. Throughout the tournament, we didn’t play well against good teams. We need to improve against good teams.”

Australia Chase Down Target with Match-Winning Partnership

Australia successfully chased India’s total thanks to an outstanding 100-run partnership between veterans Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner for the fourth wicket.

The experienced duo absorbed the pressure before accelerating at the right time to guide Australia comfortably to victory.

Captain Sophie Molineux praised both batters for their composure and smart decision-making.

“Those two batted beautifully. The way those two use their smarts, use their skills and target the short boundary and get the little things going, great to see those two get together and put on a big partnership.”

She also revealed that Perry remained confident throughout the chase.

“Pez said 170 is very, very gettable and her actions speak louder than words.”

Ellyse Perry Delighted After Big Win

Player of the Match Ellyse Perry described Australia’s victory over India as one of the team’s most satisfying performances of the tournament.

“It’s been a wonderful day for us. Incredible atmosphere. To do it against India, who we’ve had many battles with, was a really special day.”

Perry said Australia knew the pitch offered good batting conditions after watching India’s innings.

She also praised Gardner’s positive intent during the chase.

“Ash was superb. Targeted the first two balls of every over and got regular boundaries.”

India Left Searching for Answers

India’s exit raises fresh questions about their performances in major ICC tournaments against top-ranked teams.

While Harmanpreet Kaur led from the front with the bat, the captain admitted the team needs to reassess its approach before future global events.

Australia, meanwhile, move into the semi-finals with confidence after another clinical performance on the biggest stage.
