April 28, 2025: Jasprit Bumrah etched his name in the history books of Mumbai Indians as the franchise’s all-time leading wicket-taker, surpassing the legendary Lasith Malinga’s record. Bumrah achieved the milestone after taking 4 wickets for just 22 runs in Mumbai’s dominant 54-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. With this performance, Bumrah moved ahead of Malinga, who had held the record with 170 wickets. Bumrah now stands with 174 wickets for MI, further cementing his place as one of the IPL’s premier fast bowlers.

The moment was emotional and significant for the two bowlers. Following the match, Mumbai Indians took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a heartwarming exchange between the two pacers. Bumrah, with characteristic humility, acknowledged Malinga’s immense contribution to the team, saying, “You’re still better,” to which Malinga replied with a simple but impactful statement, “He is the best.”

As the celebrations continued in the dressing room, Mumbai’s seasoned pacer, Trent Boult, couldn’t help but poke fun at his teammate, urging Bumrah to deliver a speech after receiving the best bowler award. With his usual calm demeanor, Bumrah delivered a straightforward but motivating message: “We are not complacent, we are really clinical. Let’s keep the momentum going.”

Bumrah’s fiery spell against Lucknow was instrumental in breaking the back of the Super Giants’ chase as they tried to hunt down a daunting target of 216. He rattled the Lucknow top-order and cleaned up the middle-order, leaving the visitors in tatters and unable to recover.

The victory was also aided by strong performances from Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav. Rickelton laid the foundation with a well-crafted 58, while Suryakumar Yadav finished off the innings with a blistering 54, ensuring Mumbai posted an imposing 215/7.

After the win, Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma praised the team’s all-around effort, especially acknowledging the contributions of Rickelton and Yadav. “When it comes to our batting, I think we always talk about laying the foundation and then finishing off from that foundation. The foundation laid by Ryan was superb. Carrying on from that and getting us to that total, great hand by Surya,” said Rohit.

With their fifth consecutive win, Mumbai Indians moved up to third place on the IPL points table, with 12 points from 10 matches. They’ll look to continue their winning streak against Rajasthan Royals, as they take on the struggling team at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Thursday.
