MumbaI: In a high-scoring thriller at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians took control of a must-win clash against Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League 2026, thanks to a sensational opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton.
Chasing a daunting target of 229, MI lost three wickets but remained firmly in the driver’s seat, with the foundation laid by a record-breaking opening stand. Rohit played a fluent knock of 84, while Rickelton matched him stroke-for-stroke with 83, both falling agonisingly short of well-deserved centuries.
Rohit–Rickelton Set the Tone

The MI openers came out with intent, taking the attack to the LSG bowlers from the outset. Rohit showcased his trademark elegance and timing, while Rickelton impressed with aggressive strokeplay.
Their partnership not only kept the required run rate in check but also put immense pressure on the opposition, turning the chase into a realistic pursuit despite the massive target.
Pooran’s Blitz Powers LSG to 228
Earlier, Nicholas Pooran produced a breathtaking innings to power LSG to a formidable 228/5. The West Indies star smashed 63 off just 21 balls, registering his first half-century of the season in style.
Pooran shared a crucial 94-run partnership with Mitchell Marsh, who contributed a brisk 44 off 25 deliveries. The duo’s counter-attack laid the platform for LSG’s big total.
However, MI found a way back into the game through Corbin Bosch, who struck twice in quick succession, dismissing both set batters within five deliveries.
Pant’s Struggles Continue
LSG skipper Rishabh Pant endured another disappointing outing, managing just 15 runs in what has been a challenging season for the wicketkeeper-batter.
In the final overs, Aiden Markram (31*) and Himmat Singh (40*) provided a late flourish, pushing LSG past the 220 mark.
MI in Command of Crucial Clash
Despite losing a few wickets in the chase, MI remain well-positioned thanks to the explosive start. With momentum on their side and wickets in hand, the five-time champions look set to pull off a memorable chase and keep their playoff hopes alive.
