Sunrisers Hyderabad have been dealt another injury setback in the ongoing Indian Premier League season, with England left-arm seamer David Payne ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to an ankle injury.
The 35-year-old pacer featured in SRH’s first two matches this season and managed to pick up two wickets, including a disciplined performance against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Confirming the development, SRH shared an official update on social media, stating:
“David Payne has been ruled out of TATA IPL 2026 after sustaining an ankle injury. Wishing him a speedy recovery.”
Injuries Continue To Trouble SRH Camp
The 2016 IPL champions have faced persistent injury challenges this season, which have disrupted their bowling combination.
Earlier, another England cricketer, Brydon Carse, was ruled out after sustaining a hand injury at the start of the tournament. To fill the gap, SRH brought in Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka as his replacement.
Despite these setbacks, SRH have managed to stay competitive and currently sit fourth on the points table with two wins and three losses.
Big Boost As Pat Cummins Cleared To Return
While the Payne injury is a setback, SRH received positive news on Thursday morning with designated captain Pat Cummins clearing his fitness test.
Cummins, who missed the initial matches due to fitness concerns, is expected to rejoin the squad soon and could feature in the upcoming match against Rajasthan Royals on April 25 in Jaipur.
In Cummins’ absence, Ishan Kishan has been leading the team. Under his leadership, SRH have secured two victories from five matches so far and currently hold fourth place with a +0.576 net run rate.
Strong Win Against Rajasthan Royals Boosts Confidence
SRH recently delivered an impressive performance against table-toppers Rajasthan Royals, registering a commanding victory.
The team defeated Rajasthan Royals by 57 runs, successfully defending a massive target of 217 runs. The highlight of the match was an outstanding bowling performance by debutants Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain, who picked up four wickets each to bowl out RR for 159 runs in 19 overs.
This convincing win provided momentum to the side despite the ongoing injury concerns.
Next Match Against Chennai Super Kings
Sunrisers Hyderabad will next take on five-time champions Chennai Super Kings on Saturday at their home venue, the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.
With Cummins expected to return and the team riding on confidence from their recent win, SRH will be aiming to maintain their momentum despite the loss of Payne.
