May 29, 2025: It’s been a season of redemption and resurgence for Punjab Kings (PBKS), led by their high-profile skipper Shreyas Iyer. Acquired for a staggering ₹26.75 crore in the IPL 2024 auction, Iyer has silenced all doubts by steering the Punjab franchise to the top of the table and into their first playoff appearance since 2014.

After leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, Iyer’s shift to PBKS was one of the most talked-about transfers of the season. Despite the massive price tag, the decision has proven to be a masterstroke. Iyer’s leadership has brought stability, confidence, and results for a team long-starved of playoff success.

Speaking to Star Sports, Iyer made his mission clear from the start: “From the start, ever since I was picked in the auction, my goal has been clear — Punjab hasn’t won the trophy yet, and I want to help the team lift it for the first time. I want to make the fans proud and give them a reason to celebrate — because in the end, we all want to see that iconic Punjabi celebration.”

Iyer’s impact has extended beyond just tactics or batting performance. Alongside head coach Ricky Ponting, the duo has redefined the team’s culture and mindset. Ponting, who reunited with Iyer after their successful partnership at Delhi Capitals in 2020, emphasized the importance of unity and a shared vision.

“When I first took the job, the one thing I told the owners was, things are going to be different. But saying that is one thing; getting the players to buy in is another,” Ponting said. “They’re the ones who actually bring change, not me. I can share ideas, create a culture, but we all have to be in it together.”

With a top-table finish and a berth in Qualifier 1 secured, PBKS is now within touching distance of a historic IPL trophy. Fans are already dreaming of the moment their team lifts the cup for the first time — a feat Iyer and Ponting are determined to deliver.
