Musk congratulated NASA and SpaceX for another safe astronaut return while claiming the previous US administration delayed the mission for political reasons.
Florida, March 19, 2025
After over nine months in space, Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have safely returned to Earth aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, splashing down off the Florida coast at 3:27 am (IST). The Crew-9 mission successfully brought the astronauts home after their unexpectedly prolonged stay on the International Space Station (ISS).
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took to social media to congratulate the teams involved, thanking NASA and US President Donald Trump for prioritizing the mission.
“Congratulations to the @SpaceX and @NASA teams for another safe astronaut return! Thank you to @POTUS for prioritizing this mission!” Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Why Was Sunita Williams Stranded for Nine Months?
- Williams and Wilmore originally flew to ISS on Boeing’s Crew Flight Test on June 5, 2024, for an eight-day mission.
- A propulsion issue and helium leaks in Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft forced NASA to send the spacecraft back to Earth without the crew.
- By August 2024, NASA reassigned them to SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission, which had to downsize from four members to two to accommodate the stranded astronauts.
- They remained at the ISS until March 19, 2025, when SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft finally brought them home.

In an interview with Fox News, Musk made a startling claim that SpaceX had offered to return the astronauts months earlier, but the Biden administration rejected the offer for political reasons.
“We definitely offered to return the astronauts earlier. There is no question about that. The astronauts were only supposed to be there for eight days, but they ended up staying for almost 10 months. Obviously, that doesn’t make sense,” Musk said.
“We made that offer to the Biden administration, but it was rejected for political reasons. That’s just a fact,” he added.

Trump’s Role in Bringing the Astronauts Back
- In January 2025, Musk revealed that Trump had personally asked SpaceX to facilitate Williams’ and Wilmore’s return as soon as possible.
- “The @POTUS has asked @SpaceX to bring home the 2 astronauts stranded on the @Space_Station as soon as possible. We will do so,” Musk had announced.
- Trump confirmed this on TruthSocial, stating, “I have asked Elon Musk and SpaceX to ‘go get’ the two brave astronauts who have been virtually abandoned in space by the Biden Administration.”

What’s Next for Sunita Williams?
- Williams’ family confirmed she will soon visit India, as per her cousin Falguni Pandya.
- PM Narendra Modi has personally invited her, praising her fortitude and perseverance in a letter.
- She will undergo a 45-day rehabilitation program in Houston before resuming normal activities.
As celebrations continue, Musk’s revelations about the delays in her return have sparked political controversy, adding another layer to the already dramatic space saga.
