Campbell Wilson to step down as Air India prepares for next growth phase

April 7, 2026: Campbell Wilson has announced his decision to step down as CEO and Managing Director of Air India, a role he took on in July 2022 following the airline’s return to the Tata Group. Wilson had informed Chairman N Chandrasekaran of his plans back in 2024 and will continue in the position until a successor is appointed, ensuring a smooth leadership transition.

Reflecting on his tenure, Wilson highlighted key milestones, including the merger of four airlines, modernization of systems, fleet expansion with over 100 new aircraft, and improvements in service standards. He also pointed to major infrastructure developments such as a large training academy, simulator facilities, and a new maintenance base, positioning Air India for its next phase of growth with a significant aircraft order pipeline starting 2027.

Chandrasekaran praised Wilson’s leadership, noting his role in navigating post-pandemic challenges, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical pressures while transforming the airline. Reports indicate that the Tata Group has already begun searching for a successor. Wilson’s tenure, however, also saw scrutiny following a fatal Boeing 787-8 crash in 2025, even as the airline continues its broader restructuring journey.
