Tehran condemns US after warship IRIS Dena sinking, warns Washington will ‘bitterly regret’ the attack
March 5, 2026: Regional tensions have escalated after Azerbaijan accused Iran of carrying out a drone strike inside its territory, an incident that reportedly left two civilians injured. The accusation comes at a time when the Middle East is witnessing heightened geopolitical strain linked to the wider Iran–US confrontation. Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said the strike occurred within its borders and has raised serious concerns about cross-border security and regional stability.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sharply criticised the United States after the Iranian naval frigate IRIS Dena was sunk in the Indian Ocean. In a post on X, Araghchi alleged that the warship—carrying nearly 130 sailors and returning after visiting the Indian Navy—was struck without warning in international waters about 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores.
Calling the incident an “atrocity at sea,” Araghchi warned that Washington would face consequences for the strike. “Mark my words: The U.S. will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set,” he wrote, signalling that the sinking of the Iranian frigate could further deepen tensions in an already volatile geopolitical environment.
