Chances of Asteroid Hitting Earth in 2032 Increase: New Simulation Reveals Devastating Impact-Watch

NASA’s latest calculations indicate a 1 in 32 chance of Asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with Earth, but experts urge caution over panic.

February 19, 2025: NASA has raised concerns about a possible asteroid impact on Earth, increasing the probability of Asteroid 2024 YR4 striking our planet to 3.1% (1 in 32 odds) by December 22, 2032. The asteroid, first detected on December 27, 2023, by the El Sauce Observatory in Chile, has an estimated diameter of 177 feet (54 meters)—large enough to obliterate an entire city, though not a planet-wide catastrophe.

Chilling Simulation Depicts Potential Impact

A viral 3D simulation by animation expert Alvaro Gracia Montoya showcases the devastating effect an impact could have, illustrating how the asteroid would cause large-scale destruction upon collision with Earth.

An X user shared the simulation, stating:
“NASA has increased the chance a major asteroid smashes into Earth in 2032, now giving it a 3.1% chance, up from 2.6% last week. It is big enough to wipe out an entire city.”

No Immediate Cause for Panic, Say Experts

Despite the rising probability, NASA’s planetary defense team and scientists remain optimistic that further observations will refine the asteroid’s trajectory and likely reduce the impact probability to 0%.

“I’m not panicking,” said Bruce Betts, chief scientist at The Planetary Society. “The percentages may rise temporarily before they eventually fall to zero.”

Additionally, there is a 0.3% chance that Asteroid 2024 YR4 could hit the moon instead of Earth, according to Live Science.

What’s Next?

NASA and the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) continue to monitor the asteroid closely, with further calculations expected to determine if Earth’s defenses need to be activated.

With eight years left, planetary defense experts remain confident that deflection missions, such as NASA’s DART program, could be used to alter the asteroid’s path if necessary.
