Trump threatens military action and fresh tariffs as Iran refuses direct nuclear negotiations with the US, sparking renewed geopolitical tension.
March 30, 2025: In a fiery statement that has reignited global concerns over Middle East tensions, US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran, declaring that if Tehran fails to strike a nuclear deal with Washington, there would be “bombing”.
Speaking to NBC News, Trump said, “If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing. But there’s a chance that if they don’t make a deal, I will do secondary tariffs on them like I did four years ago.”
The comments come as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian publicly rejected the idea of direct negotiations with the United States. “We don’t avoid talks; it’s the breach of promises that has caused issues for us so far,” Pezeshkian said during a Cabinet meeting, asserting that the US must first prove it can be trusted.

Trump, during his first term, withdrew the US from the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement, which placed limits on Iran’s uranium enrichment program in exchange for sanctions relief. Following the US exit, Iran gradually violated the deal’s terms, enriching uranium beyond permitted levels.
Further complicating matters, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei recently dismissed talks with the US as “neither intelligent, wise, nor honorable,” effectively closing the door on any direct diplomacy under Trump’s administration.
Amid these developments, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf issued his own warning, claiming American military bases in the Middle East are vulnerable. “If they violate Iran’s sovereignty, it will be like a spark in a gunpowder depot, setting the entire region ablaze,” he said on Friday.
The renewed tension follows a letter sent by Trump to Tehran earlier in March, which Iranian leadership has brushed aside.
Meanwhile, in the same NBC interview, Trump also criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his comments on Ukraine, stating he was “very angry” with the Russian leader for undermining Ukraine’s leadership.
