Since the Election Commission of India activated its seizure management system on February 26, enforcement teams have been working around the clock. Consequently, the total value of seized items has reached staggering heights. Tamil Nadu accounts for the largest share at ₹599.2 crore, while officials in West Bengal have confiscated goods worth ₹472.9 crore.

Tamil Nadu Leads in Cash and Gold Seizures

Tamil Nadu is currently voting in a single phase this Thursday. Interestingly, the state has become a hotspot for illegal cash and precious metals. Reports show that over ₹100 crore in hard cash was intercepted there, which represents about 78% of all cash seized across the two states.

Furthermore, Tamil Nadu reported nearly three times the amount of seized precious metals compared to West Bengal. Additionally, the Election Commission of India noted that the value of seized freebies, such as electronics and household items, was significantly higher in the southern state, totaling ₹259 crore.

Liquor and Drugs Flow Heavily into West Bengal

West Bengal is set to vote in two phases, starting today and continuing on April 29. While cash is the main issue in the south, liquor is the primary concern here. In fact, West Bengal accounts for 96% of the total liquor value seized, with officials intercepting nearly 39.3 lakh liters worth over ₹102 crore.

Drugs are also a major part of the illegal trade in the east. Specifically, authorities in West Bengal seized narcotics worth ₹108 crore. Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India continues to monitor the borders to prevent these substances from influencing the democratic process.

Strict Surveillance to Ensure Fair Polling

To maintain order, the Election Commission of India held several high-level meetings with Chief Secretaries and Police DGPs. They have issued strict orders to prevent any form of voter intimidation or bribery. Because the stakes are so high, the commission has deployed over 5,000 flying squads and 5,300 static surveillance teams.

While the world watches the extended ceasefire with Iran, the domestic focus remains on these critical state elections. The Election Commission of India protects the integrity of the vote and ensures that every citizen can choose their leader.
