IMD Issues Heatwave Alert For Delhi-NCR, Northwest India; Rainfall Likely In East And Northeast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert warning that heatwave conditions will continue across several parts of northwest India, including Delhi-NCR, over the next few days. At the same time, rainfall and thunderstorm activity is expected in eastern and northeastern regions of the country.

According to the latest IMD update, ongoing heatwave conditions across Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are expected to persist for at least three more days, with the intense heat gradually spreading towards eastern India and adjoining central regions.


Heatwave Intensifies Across Delhi-NCR With Temperatures Up To 44°C

The IMD said a fresh spell of heatwave began on April 18 over Haryana and has since expanded to several regions, including Delhi, Uttarakhand and parts of Madhya Pradesh.

In Delhi-NCR, weather conditions are expected to remain mainly clear with rising temperatures until April 24. Maximum temperatures are forecast to range between 40°C and 44°C, staying above seasonal averages in most areas.

Heatwave conditions are likely at isolated places on:

  • April 22
  • April 23
  • April 24

Strong daytime surface winds of 20–30 kmph are also expected during this period.


All Districts In Delhi-NCR To Experience Similar Conditions

The district-wise forecast indicates similar weather patterns across all parts of Delhi-NCR, including major NCR cities such as:

  • Noida
  • Ghaziabad
  • Gurgaon
  • Faridabad

Clear skies are expected to dominate across the region, with heatwave conditions continuing for at least three consecutive days before slight cloud cover develops around April 25.


Several Regions Record Temperatures Above 40°C

Across India, many regions have already recorded extreme temperatures between 40°C and 45°C.

High temperatures were reported in:

  • Vidarbha
  • Marathwada
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Parts of Telangana
  • Eastern Uttar Pradesh

The highest temperature of 44.4°C was recorded in Allahabad.

Many areas in Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh reported temperatures significantly above normal.


Rainfall And Thunderstorms Expected In Northeast And Eastern India

While northwest India continues to battle extreme heat, northeastern India is expected to witness widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning throughout the week.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in:

  • Arunachal Pradesh
  • Assam
  • Meghalaya

Eastern India, including:

  • West Bengal
  • Bihar
  • Jharkhand
  • Odisha

is likely to experience scattered rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds in the coming days.


Thunderstorms, Hailstorms Likely In Central And Southern States

Central India is expected to receive light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, particularly across:

  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Chhattisgarh
  • Vidarbha

There is also a possibility of hailstorms in Vidarbha, the IMD said.

Similar thunderstorm activity with gusty winds is forecast across southern states, including:

  • Telangana
  • Karnataka
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Kerala

Hot And Humid Conditions To Persist In Coastal Regions

The IMD has also warned of hot and humid conditions across several coastal and eastern regions, including:

  • Tamil Nadu
  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh
  • Odisha
  • Kerala
  • Parts of Gujarat

Additionally, warm night conditions are likely in several states, including Haryana, Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, making nights uncomfortable despite the onset of evening hours.
