Mamata Banerjee claims BJP is trying to derail her Bhabanipur candidacy, raises serious allegations over voter rolls and poll fairness.
April 11, 2026: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to derail her candidature from the Bhabanipur seat by allegedly trying to file false cases against her. Addressing a rally in Keshiyari, she claimed that the move was foiled by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and local residents. Banerjee, who is contesting against Suvendu Adhikari, termed the alleged attempt part of a broader strategy to block her electoral prospects.
Escalating her attack, Banerjee alleged that nearly 90 lakh names were removed from electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision process, claiming the exercise was carried out with the support of the Election Commission of India. She accused the BJP of resorting to unfair means, including attempts to manipulate electronic voting machines, to influence poll outcomes. She also criticised a senior EC official, alleging bias in favour of the ruling party at the Centre.
The chief minister further described the revision process as a “big scam,” claiming it disproportionately affected both Hindu and Muslim voters and even led to multiple deaths. She questioned the need for repeated citizenship verification and accused authorities of targeting Bengali-speaking citizens. Opposing the BJP’s push for a Uniform Civil Code, Banerjee warned it could undermine religious freedoms. She also raised concerns over vote counting, urging voters to remain alert and monitor the process closely.
