Centre rules out toll on Indian vessels, steps up evacuation and diplomatic efforts
April 2, 2026: India on Thursday clarified that there have been no discussions with Iran regarding any toll on Indian vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Addressing speculation, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said there is “no such discussion” on any toll mechanism, even as concerns grow over disruptions in the key global shipping route amid escalating tensions in West Asia.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the government is closely monitoring developments around the Strait, given its importance for global oil and trade flows. Officials emphasized that maritime security remains a priority as instability in the region continues to impact international supply chains and shipping operations.
Meanwhile, India has intensified evacuation efforts, with over 1,200 nationals brought out of Iran so far, including a large number of students. According to the ministry, evacuees have been moved through transit hubs like Armenia and Azerbaijan, where arrangements are being made for their return home. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also engaged with global leaders to discuss the evolving crisis, underlining India’s diplomatic push to ensure safety, stability, and uninterrupted trade.
