Mumbai: The mysterious deaths of a family of four in Mumbai last week, initially suspected to be linked to contaminated watermelon, have taken a more complex turn. Early forensic findings now suggest the possibility of poisoning, even as authorities caution that the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

The victims — Abdullah Dokadia (45), a local trader who ran a mobile accessories shop, his wife Nasreen (35), and their daughters Zainab (13) and Ayesha (16) — had hosted a family dinner at their residence on Saturday night. They served mutton pulao to five relatives, who later left without reporting any illness.

According to reports, the family consumed watermelon around 1 am after the gathering. Within a few hours, by approximately 5 am, all four began experiencing severe symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhoea, initially pointing towards food poisoning. However, the condition worsened rapidly, and they died within hours.

Forensic Findings Raise Red Flags

Preliminary forensic observations have raised serious concerns. Sources indicated that several organs of the victims — including the brain, heart, and intestines — had turned green, an unusual finding that may suggest toxic exposure rather than routine food poisoning.

Medical experts examining the case have also noted that the symptoms and internal changes do not align with typical cases of Food poisoning, adding to the suspicion of a more serious underlying cause.

Morphine Detection Adds to Mystery

Further complicating the investigation, traces of Morphine — a potent opioid usually administered in controlled medical settings — were reportedly detected in Abdullah Dokadia’s body.

Investigators are now trying to determine whether this was due to prior medical treatment, accidental exposure, or a more deliberate act. The presence of morphine has opened up additional lines of inquiry for the police and forensic teams.

No Direct Link to Watermelon Yet

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has clarified that there is currently no confirmed link between the deaths and watermelon consumption. Officials have urged caution against drawing premature conclusions, stating that only scientific analysis will determine the exact cause.

Despite this, initial reports had triggered concern among consumers, with some areas reportedly witnessing a drop in watermelon prices due to fear surrounding the incident.

Investigation Underway

Police have registered a case of accidental death and are continuing their probe. Statements have been recorded from relatives who attended the dinner and consumed the same meal but did not fall ill, suggesting that the pulao may not have been the source of contamination.

Authorities are also examining other angles, including whether the family was under any form of stress, as well as the possibility of external toxins or adulterants in the watermelon.

Meanwhile, doctors who conducted the autopsies have reserved their final opinion. The viscera samples of the deceased have been sent for detailed chemical analysis, and officials say the final report will be crucial in determining the cause of death.
