The government rolls out e-passports across India under PSP 2.0, promising faster processing, enhanced security, and global travel ease

The Indian government has officially rolled out the e-passport service across the country under the upgraded Passport Seva Programme (PSP) 2.0, aiming to transform how Indian citizens travel and identify themselves globally.

Announcing the development, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said the initiative aligns with India’s broader Digital India vision, bringing advanced technologies into everyday public services. “We are committed to delivering the next level of citizen-centric service. PSP V2.0 leverages cutting-edge technology to make travel safer and easier,” he said.
What is an e-passport?
An e-passport is a paper-and-electronic hybrid document with a secure RFID chip embedded inside the front cover. This chip holds vital biometric and personal data, including the holder’s photograph, fingerprints, name, passport number, and date of birth.

These passports can be distinguished from regular ones by a small gold chip symbol on the front cover.
How to Apply for an E-Passport:
- Visit the official Passport Seva website.
- Register as a new user or log in if you already have an account.
- Fill out the e-passport application form.
- Schedule an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office PSK (POPSK).
- Pay the applicable fee.
- Visit the PSK/POPSK for document verification and biometric data capture.
