Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Ajay Mitchell has emerged as a critical postseason anchor for the defending champions. The 23-year-old breakout player is currently starting in the Western Conference semifinals against the Los Angeles Lakers. This promotion follows a season of immense personal growth and tragedy; Mitchell’s father, Barry Mitchell, a legendary figure in Belgian basketball, passed away on December 17, 2025, at the age of 60.

Postseason Performance and Impact

Despite the loss, Mitchell’s composure has been a defining feature of the Thunder’s playoff run. He recently helped lead the team through a first-round series sweep against the Phoenix Suns, including a career-high 20-shot effort in his first NBA playoff start on April 25.

Currently, Mitchell is filling a vital role in the starting lineup while All-NBA wing Jalen Williams recovers from a hamstring injury. In the series opener against the Lakers on May 6, Mitchell contributed 18 points and four assists, helping the Thunder to a 108-90 victory. As of the morning of May 8, 2026, Mitchell is actively playing in Game 2, where he has already recorded 20 points and 5 assists with the Thunder leading by 17 in the fourth quarter.

A Legacy of His Own

Mitchell’s breakout second year saw him finish near the top of the Sixth Man of the Year voting, trailing only Keldon Johnson and Jaime Jaquez Jr. Throughout this journey, the guard has remained vocal about his father’s influence, noting that Barry Mitchell never forced the sport upon him but always encouraged him to build his own identity.

“He’d always say, ‘You’re gonna be you. You’re not gonna be a second version of me,’” Mitchell shared. “I’m living this dream for me, obviously, but also for him.”

Team Support and Leadership

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault and teammates like NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander have praised Mitchell’s unshakable mentality. Coach Daigneault noted that Mitchell never “hides” from the moment, while Gilgeous-Alexander highlighted his consistency, stating that the young guard remains “solid” regardless of the pressure or personal challenges he faces.
