The death toll from the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has risen to more than 5,000, according to the country’s National Assembly chief, Jorge Rodriguez.
In a post shared on Telegram on Friday, Rodriguez confirmed that 5,069 people lost their lives after two major earthquakes hit the country on June 24.
Two Powerful Quakes Hit Venezuela
The disaster began when two strong earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck Venezuela within a short period.
The powerful tremors caused widespread destruction across several regions. Buildings collapsed, roads were damaged, and emergency teams rushed to rescue people trapped under debris.
Authorities have continued search and recovery operations since the earthquakes struck.
La Guaira Worst Affected
According to Jorge Rodriguez, the coastal state of La Guaira recorded the highest number of deaths.
The region suffered extensive damage because of the strong shaking. Rescue workers have been working around the clock to clear debris, recover victims, and provide assistance to survivors.
Meanwhile, relief efforts are continuing in affected communities as thousands of people remain displaced.
Rescue and Relief Operations Continue
Emergency services and government agencies are still assessing the full extent of the destruction.
Officials are focusing on restoring essential services, providing temporary shelters, and delivering food, water, and medical aid to families affected by the disaster.
The updated death toll highlights the devastating impact of one of the deadliest natural disasters to hit Venezuela in recent years.
