Before creating an unforgettable moment in his career, India’s star batter Virat Kohli admitted that he lacked confidence ahead of the T20 World Cup final in Barbados. Throughout the tournament, Kohli had struggled to find his form, scoring only 75 runs in seven matches at an average of 10.71, far below his usual standards.
However, in the final against South Africa, when India needed him most, Kohli delivered an exceptional performance, proving that ‘form is temporary, class is permanent.’ His dynamic 76 off 59 deliveries set the tone for the game and helped India post a competitive total of 176/7.
“This day will always remain in my mind because, throughout the tournament, I couldn’t contribute as I wanted to,” Kohli shared during the Indian team’s interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
Before the final, head coach Rahul Dravid had backed Kohli to perform, despite his struggles throughout the tournament. Skipper Rohit Sharma also expressed confidence in Kohli, believing he was saving his best for the final.
Kohli’s intent was clear when he struck two fours in his first couple of deliveries, hinting at the onslaught to come. “I told Rahul bhai that I hadn’t done justice to myself or the team. He assured me that when the situation demanded, I would find my form,” Kohli recalled.
Despite a strong start, India found themselves in a precarious situation, reduced to 34/3 within the powerplay. Kohli adjusted his approach, rotating the strike and allowing Axar Patel to take risks.
“When we lost wickets, I focused on what the team needed from me. I surrendered to the situation and realized that whatever happens, happens for a reason,” Kohli added.
As India defended their total, South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen and Quinton de Kock threatened to take the game away. With 30 runs needed off the final five overs, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a clinical over, followed by Hardik Pandya dismissing Klaasen. Arshdeep Singh joined the attack, helping India secure a 7-run victory and ending their 13-year-long wait for an ICC World Cup trophy.
“We lived each ball at the end, the emotions were indescribable. One moment we lost hope, then Hardik took a wicket, and with each ball, our energy grew. I’m happy I could contribute to the team in such a big game after a tough time. I won’t forget it,” Kohli remarked.
After this historic performance, Kohli bid farewell to his T20I career, passing the baton to the next generation.
