Edward Whitehead, a software developer from South Africa’s Western Cape, revealed that he has been unemployed for nearly a year and has been unable to secure even a short-term contract despite relentlessly applying for jobs and trying multiple job-search strategies.
‘There Are Days When I Feel Like Giving Up’
In his now-viral LinkedIn post, Whitehead opened up about the emotional toll of prolonged unemployment, saying his family continues to motivate him through difficult times.
“It’s been almost 12 months since I was laid off, and I haven’t secured a single job — not even a short-term contract. There are days when I feel like giving up. Then I look at my two beautiful children and my incredibly supportive wife, and I’m reminded why I can’t,” said Whitehead.
He explained that despite trying nearly every possible approach to land a new role, the outcome has remained the same.
“At times, it feels like I’m banging my head against a wall, hoping for a different outcome. The reality is that the results have been the same, despite trying countless approaches. New resumes, new strategies, new applications, networking, reaching out to people, you name it, I’ve tried it.”
Building Products While Searching for Work
Rather than depending solely on job applications, Whitehead said he has been investing his time in developing new software products, hoping one of them eventually turns into a sustainable business opportunity.
“I’ve been pouring my energy into building two new software products. Maybe, just maybe, one of them will become the opportunity that changes everything,” he said.
Despite months of disappointment, he encouraged fellow job seekers not to lose hope.
“Keep believing that the right opportunity is out there. Keep showing up, even on the days when it’s hard.”
Whitehead also appealed to his professional network for job leads, saying he is open to opportunities in software development, technical leadership, product delivery, and technology consulting, where he has accumulated more than two decades of experience.
