In a bold political move, Canada’s newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for a snap federal election, scheduled for April 28, 2025. The decision comes amid rising tensions with the United States over escalating trade disputes and controversial remarks by US President Donald Trump, who has provocatively hinted at annexing Canada as America’s “51st state.”

Carney, who took over the leadership after Justin Trudeau stepped down last week, emphasized the need for a decisive mandate to steer the nation through this turbulent period. “Donald Trump wants to break us so America can own us. We will not let that happen,” Carney declared in his announcement, striking a patriotic tone.

The Liberal leader confirmed that he had received approval from the Governor General to dissolve parliament and initiate the election process. He believes a refreshed mandate is essential for confronting external threats and taking bold action.

The snap polls come as the political landscape in Canada undergoes a major shake-up. Trudeau’s Liberal government, in power for a decade, faced plummeting popularity, prompting his resignation. Carney’s rise to power has injected fresh energy into the party, and he hopes to rally Canadians around national unity in response to Trump’s antagonism.

Trump’s recent imposition of heavy tariffs on Canadian goods has further strained cross-border relations. His remarks likening Canada to a US territory and his dismissal of the country’s electoral outcome have shifted the focus of the upcoming election from domestic issues like inflation and immigration to matters of national sovereignty and economic resilience.

On April 28, Canadians will vote to elect 343 members to the House of Commons—five more than in the 2021 election, reflecting population growth. The election will follow the first-past-the-post system, where the candidate with the most votes in each riding wins.

To form a majority government, a party needs at least 172 seats. If no party crosses that threshold, the one with the most seats must earn the confidence of the house to govern.

As the campaign gears up, Carney and his Liberal Party face off against the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, in what is shaping up to be one of the most critical elections in Canada’s recent history.
