Tehran demands recognition of rights, reparations and security guarantees for ceasefire

March 12, 2026: Iran has said the ongoing conflict could end if its core demands are accepted, with President Masoud Pezeshkian stating that recognition of Iran’s rights, payment of reparations and guarantees against future attacks are essential for a ceasefire. The remarks come as tensions with the United States and Israel continue to escalate, affecting regional stability, energy markets and critical shipping routes. Tehran has indicated it is open to ending the war but insists that any settlement must address its security concerns and wartime losses.

According to Pezeshkian, the conflict can end only if Iran’s conditions are met. He said the only path to peace involves recognition of Iran’s “legitimate rights,” payment of reparations for damage caused during the war, and firm international guarantees to prevent future aggression. Iranian officials have described these demands as non-negotiable, warning that a settlement ignoring them would not be acceptable to Tehran.

The crisis has already disrupted trade and oil markets, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, through which a large portion of global energy supplies passes. Amid the tensions, S. Jaishankar has held multiple conversations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi regarding maritime safety and energy security, while Narendra Modi has also spoken with Gulf leaders to stress the need for dialogue and the protection of civilians.
