PM flags security, trade concerns amid rising tensions

March 21, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a telephonic conversation with Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran, extending greetings on Eid and Nowruz while discussing the evolving crisis in West Asia. During the call, Modi expressed hope that the festive season would bring peace and stability to the region even as tensions continue to rise.

The Prime Minister raised concerns over recent attacks on critical infrastructure, warning that such incidents threaten regional stability and disrupt global supply chains. He also stressed the importance of keeping maritime routes open, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor, and reiterated the need to ensure freedom of navigation.

This was the second conversation between the two leaders since the conflict began on February 28. India has remained in close diplomatic contact with regional stakeholders, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also engaging with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. Meanwhile, disruptions in the Persian Gulf have left several Indian vessels stranded, although recent tanker movements indicate gradual progress in ensuring safe passage.
