Kremlin condemns US-Israel action, urges return to diplomacy
March 1, 2026: Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly condemned reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in strikes attributed to Israel and the United States. Calling the killing a “heinous murder” and a breach of international law, Putin conveyed condolences to Iran’s leadership and people, underscoring Moscow’s longstanding ties with Tehran. The Kremlin said the development risks further destabilising an already volatile Middle East.
In an official statement, Putin described the reported attack as a “cynical violation of human morality and international law,” expressing sympathy to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Khamenei’s family and the Iranian public. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Khamenei would be remembered in Russia as an “outstanding statesman” who strengthened bilateral ties. Moscow urged Tehran to prioritise diplomatic channels over escalation, while Russia’s foreign ministry called on Washington and Tel Aviv to halt military operations and return to political dialogue.
Putin’s response highlights Russia’s careful balancing act as it maintains strategic relations with Iran while keeping diplomatic engagement with Western powers. Officials warned that continued strikes could widen the conflict and undermine international stability, potentially drawing in additional actors. With global capitals closely watching developments, Russia’s stance may influence deliberations within international forums, including the United Nations, as efforts intensify to prevent a broader regional war.
