Mahindra & Mahindra explores CKD expansion near Durban to strengthen market presence

April 15, 2026: Mahindra & Mahindra is reportedly evaluating plans to upgrade its manufacturing facility in South Africa as it seeks to tap into growing demand for affordable vehicles. The company is working with the Industrial Development Corporation to explore the feasibility of introducing completely knocked-down (CKD) production at its plant near Durban. Currently, Mahindra assembles semi-knocked down vehicles at the facility.

The move comes as competition intensifies in South Africa’s mid-market automobile segment, with players like Chery Automobile and Suzuki Motor Corporation expanding their footprint. Increasing local production could help Mahindra avoid potential import tariffs being considered by the government of Cyril Ramaphosa to promote domestic manufacturing. The strategy would also strengthen Mahindra’s position against established players such as Toyota Motor Corporation.

Mahindra’s facility, operational since 2018, currently produces Pik Up light trucks that are widely used by farmers and security agencies in the region. Introducing CKD production would mark a significant upgrade in its manufacturing capabilities, enabling the company to assemble vehicles locally from imported parts. This step signals deeper investment in the South African market and aligns with Mahindra’s broader global expansion strategy.
