The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that 98.47% of the ₹2,000 banknotes withdrawn from circulation in May 2023 have been returned to the banking system. Despite the withdrawal, the ₹2,000 note continues to remain legal tender, meaning it is still valid for transactions and can be exchanged or deposited through designated RBI facilities.
According to the RBI, the total value of ₹2,000 notes in circulation has declined sharply from ₹3.56 lakh crore at the time of the withdrawal announcement on May 19, 2023, to just ₹5,451 crore as of April 30, 2026.
What Can You Do With a ₹2,000 Note?
If you still possess a ₹2,000 banknote, there is no immediate cause for concern. The note remains valid and can continue to be used as legal currency.
Individuals can exchange ₹2,000 notes at any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices across the country. These offices also allow note holders to deposit the currency directly into their bank accounts.
Additionally, people who cannot visit an RBI office in person can send the notes through India Post from any post office to an RBI Issue Office for credit into their bank account.
Why Were ₹2,000 Notes Withdrawn?
The RBI announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 denomination notes from circulation on May 19, 2023, as part of its currency management strategy. While fresh issuance of these notes has been discontinued, the central bank has clarified that they continue to be legal tender and can still be exchanged or deposited through RBI-authorised channels.
With nearly all ₹2,000 notes now back in the banking system, only a small fraction remains in circulation, reflecting the success of the RBI’s phased withdrawal exercise.
