The National Human Rights Commission has sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh government

July 10, 2026: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) and the state’s Home Secretary over allegations that police used excessive force during a protest in Meerut. Taking cognisance of a complaint under the Protection of Human Rights Act, the Commission observed that the allegations, if true, prima facie indicate violations of human rights and directed the authorities to submit an action taken report within 15 days.

The complaint, filed by Sunil Ahirwar of Bhopal, alleged that police carried out an “unprovoked and brutal lathi-charge” on demonstrators who had gathered peacefully to demand justice in the Lalita Gautam murder case. It further claimed that several protesters suffered serious injuries and that viral videos showed senior police officers allegedly assaulting detained individuals, raising concerns over custodial violence and misuse of force.

The complainant urged the NHRC to order an independent inquiry, verify the authenticity of the viral videos, identify the officials responsible, and ensure criminal and departmental action against those found guilty. The plea also sought medical assistance and financial compensation for the injured protesters. The Commission has directed that a copy of its proceedings be sent to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary to ensure compliance with its directions.
