NEW DELHI – In a significant move to consolidate everyday digital services, WhatsApp has announced the launch of a prepaid mobile recharge feature for its Indian users. Developed in partnership with the payment service provider PayU, this integration allows users to top up their mobile plans directly within the messaging interface, eliminating the need to toggle between multiple service apps.

Seamless Connectivity Across Major Operators
The feature is currently being rolled out in phases for both Android and iOS users. It supports all major Indian telecom service providers, ensuring a wide reach across the country’s massive prepaid user base.
- Supported Operators: Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi).
- Payment Methods: Integrated with WhatsApp Pay, supporting UPI, debit cards, and credit cards.
How to Use the New Recharge Feature
To streamline the user experience, Meta has introduced a dedicated rupee (₹) icon prominently displayed on the app’s home screen and within individual chat composers.
- Access: Tap the ₹ icon on the home screen or in a chat.
- Select Service: Choose “Mobile Prepaid Recharge.”
- Details: Enter or select the mobile number (for yourself or family).
- Plan Selection: Confirm the operator and browse through available data and talktime plans.
- Payment: Complete the transaction using your preferred payment mode.
Expanding the “Super-App” Ecosystem
This update is part of WhatsApp’s broader strategy to transform into a multi-utility platform in India—its largest market. By housing essential services under one roof, WhatsApp aims to increase user stickiness and transaction volume.
| Feature | Description |
| Metro Ticketing | Existing integration with Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai Metros. |
| UPI Payments | Peer-to-peer and merchant payments via WhatsApp Pay. |
| Utility Access | Access to government citizen services via official chatbots. |
| New: Mobile Recharge | Direct in-app top-ups for prepaid connections. |
Official Commentary
Ravi Garg, Director of Business Messaging at Meta India, noted that the move is aimed at making essential tasks “frictionless.” Hemang Dattani, Chief Business Officer at PayU, added that since mobile recharges are a routine digital transaction, bringing them to an app users already have open throughout the day is a natural progression for digital payments in India.
