Sunny Deol’s much-awaited historical drama Batwara 1947 has achieved a major milestone before its theatrical release. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has reportedly cleared the film without any cuts, allowing the makers to release it as planned.
According to a source quoted by media, the CBFC has awarded the film an Adults Only (A) certificate. The certification process is now complete, and the film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on August 14, 2026.
Batwara 1947 receives A certificate without edits
The makers reportedly received the CBFC certificate on July 23. The certification details also reveal that the film has a runtime of 145.34 minutes, which is approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes.
Receiving clearance without any edits is considered a significant development, especially for a film based on the sensitive backdrop of India’s Partition.
Story is inspired by a celebrated stage play
Batwara 1947 draws inspiration from Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play, Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.
The story is set during the Partition of India in 1947 and revolves around a family that relocates to Lahore after the division of the country. They move into an abandoned Hindu house, believing it to be vacant.
However, their lives change when they discover an elderly Hindu woman who still lives in the house and refuses to leave the place she has called home for years.
As the family and the woman begin living under the same roof, the film explores themes of humanity, identity, compassion and coexistence during one of the most painful chapters in Indian history.
Star-studded cast joins Sunny Deol
Apart from Sunny Deol, the film features an impressive ensemble cast.
The movie stars Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta, Karan Deol, Khushi Hajare, Kanikka Kapur, and Khali in important roles. Actor Ali Fazal also makes a special appearance.
The film is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi, who is known for directing several critically acclaimed and commercially successful films.

Earlier, Ali Fazal shared his experience of working with Sunny Deol during the making of Batwara 1947.
Speaking to media, the actor described Sunny Deol as a warm and collaborative co-star.
“Sunny sir is all heart. I think people know that. The whole family is like that. Their family has been a big part of the history and legacy of our film industry. There’s a lot of respect for him. He was very collaborative. It was a lovely journey. We shot it for a while. Some patchwork was left, and we shot it later. It was really nice,” Ali Fazal said.
Release date
With the CBFC certification now complete, Batwara 1947 is all set for its theatrical release on August 14, 2026, just ahead of India’s Independence Day.
The historical drama is expected to bring an emotional and thought-provoking story of Partition to the big screen through the vision of Rajkumar Santoshi and an experienced ensemble cast.
