Amid growing protests over the NEET paper leak controversy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Union ministers to become more active on Instagram and use Reels and interactive content to connect with young Indians.
During the Cabinet meeting held on Friday, Modi reportedly told his ministers that Instagram has become one of the most influential platforms among the country’s youth. Therefore, he said it should be used not only for government communication but also for direct public engagement.
Modi urges ministers to create Reels and interactive content
According to reports, the Prime Minister encouraged every Union minister to create short-form video content, including Instagram Reels, and participate in interactive sessions with citizens.
He stressed that crores of young Indians use Instagram daily. As a result, ministers should use the platform to explain government initiatives in a simpler and more accessible manner.
Modi also reportedly said that social media communication should not remain limited to official announcements. Instead, ministers should interact with students and young citizens more frequently.
Focus on engaging with students
The directive comes at a time when the government is facing criticism over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak and the handling of the examination controversy.
According to sources, the Prime Minister specifically highlighted the importance of engaging with students, who form a significant share of social media users in India.
By using Reels, question-and-answer sessions and other interactive formats, ministers can communicate policies more effectively and respond to public concerns in real time.
Video message released before Cabinet meeting
Hours before the Cabinet meeting, Modi released a video message on social media platforms, including Instagram, outlining the government’s proposed steps to tackle examination-related malpractices.
In the video, he announced that the government plans to establish fast-track courts for paper leak cases and ensure strict punishment for those involved in such offences.
He also said that the proposal would be placed before the Cabinet and later introduced in Parliament.
Government looks to strengthen digital outreach
The latest instruction reflects the government’s broader push to strengthen its digital outreach, especially among younger audiences.
Short-form video platforms have become a major source of information and discussion for many Indians under the age of 30. Therefore, the Centre appears keen to use these platforms more aggressively for public communication.
The move is also expected to encourage ministers to maintain a more visible online presence and engage with citizens beyond traditional press conferences and official statements.
