Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has become a major success for IMAX, setting new box office records and boosting the company’s financial performance in the second quarter of 2026.
According to IMAX Corporation’s latest earnings release, the film delivered the biggest IMAX opening weekend ever in like-for-like markets. It also generated unprecedented demand for premium-format screenings, reinforcing IMAX’s position in the global theatrical market.
The Odyssey Creates History for IMAX
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond described The Odyssey as a landmark achievement for both the company and the film industry.
He said the movie is the first full-length theatrical release filmed entirely using IMAX film cameras, making it a defining moment for the premium cinema experience.
“As we enter the second half of 2026, Christopher Nolan’s breathtaking The Odyssey is emerging as a transformational event for IMAX,” Gelfond said.
He added that the film could influence the company’s future in several expected and unexpected ways as its success inspires filmmakers and the broader entertainment industry.
Record-Breaking Opening Weekend
The Odyssey earned $52 million during its global IMAX opening weekend.
The film accounted for 20% of its worldwide box office during its debut, highlighting the strong demand for IMAX screenings.
Following the release, IMAX also recorded its highest-grossing Monday and Tuesday in company history.
In addition, advance ticket sales for upcoming screenings have already reached around $60 million, reflecting continued audience interest.
The reported global figures do not include South Korea, Mainland China, and Japan, where the film will release later.

IMAX Reports Strong Financial Results
The success of The Odyssey helped IMAX deliver solid financial growth during the second quarter of 2026.

- Adjusted EBITDA: $48 million, up 23%.
- Adjusted earnings per share (EPS): 43 cents, compared to 26 cents in Q2 2025, representing a 65% increase.
The results underline the growing demand for premium cinema experiences worldwide.
IMAX Expands Its Global Network
The company also continued expanding its theatre network during the quarter.
IMAX installed 38 new systems, marking its strongest second-quarter installation performance in the last ten years.
As of June 30, 2026, IMAX operated 1,809 commercial multiplex systems globally, compared with 1,750 systems during the same period last year.
The expansion reflects the company’s continued investment in premium cinema technology.
Other Strong Performers During the Quarter
Besides The Odyssey, several major releases contributed to IMAX’s strong quarter.
The company’s global Q2 box office reached $285 million, its highest second-quarter total since 2019.
Top-performing IMAX titles included:
- Michael – $69 million
- The Mandalorian & Grogu – $42 million
- The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – $39 million
These releases helped maintain strong audience attendance throughout the quarter.
