The search eventually led to Saira Banu, whom Rahman’s mother met through family connections in Chennai.
Rahman first met Saira on January 6, 1995—his birthday. Their courtship remained largely private, with many conversations taking place over the phone.
Before marriage, Rahman candidly informed her that music would always remain an important part of his life and career. Saira understood and accepted the demands of his profession.
The couple married on March 12, 1995.
