Veteran Bollywood actor Hema Malini has revealed that if a biographical film is ever made on her extraordinary life and career, she would like to see Deepika Padukone step into her shoes.
The legendary actress made the remark while celebrating an incredible milestone—60 years in Indian cinema—during a special event held in Mumbai. Looking back on her illustrious journey, Hema Malini reflected on her career, family, and the people who played a pivotal role in shaping her life.
Deepika Padukone Gets Hema Malini’s Approval for Her Biopic
During an interaction at the event, Hema Malini was asked which contemporary actress she would choose to portray her on screen if her life story were adapted into a film.
Responding warmly, Hema Malini said she would be happy if Deepika Padukone took on the role.
She praised Deepika, describing her as both beautiful and immensely talented, making her a fitting choice to portray the iconic “Dream Girl” of Indian cinema.
A Bond That Goes Back Several Years
The admiration between Hema Malini and Deepika Padukone is not new. Their association dates back to 2017, when Deepika officially launched Hema Malini’s biography, Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl, written by Ram Kamal Mukherjee.
Their connection also extends to the silver screen. Deepika’s memorable character Shantipriya in her blockbuster debut Om Shanti Om (2007) was inspired by Hema Malini’s timeless “Dream Girl” persona. The tribute established a symbolic link between two generations of Bollywood’s leading ladies.
A Grand Celebration of 60 Glorious Years
Hema Malini shared these thoughts during “Hema Malini – Live In Concert: Celebrating the Dream Girl’s Diamond Jubilee – 60 Glorious Years in Cinema,” held at Mumbai’s Shanmukhananda Hall on Friday.
The charity event, produced and directed by RJ Anirudh, celebrated the veteran actor’s remarkable contribution to Indian cinema over the past six decades. The evening featured performances and tributes honouring her enduring legacy in the film industry.
An Emotional Tribute to Family
The event also turned emotional as Hema Malini paid tribute to her late husband, veteran actor Dharmendra, who passed away in November 2025 at the age of 89.
Remembering him with affection, she reflected on the support and companionship they shared throughout their lives.
Hema Malini also fondly remembered her late mother and former manager, Jaya Chakravarti, acknowledging her immense contribution to her successful career. She credited her mother with guiding every important step of her professional journey and emphasised the vital role parents—especially mothers—play in nurturing and shaping their children’s dreams.
According to Hema Malini, the unwavering support of her family was instrumental in helping her become one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated stars.
After six decades in the industry, Hema Malini continues to remain one of Bollywood’s most respected and admired personalities. Her endorsement of Deepika Padukone as the actress who could portray her on screen has already sparked excitement among fans, who see the casting as a fitting tribute to two of Hindi cinema’s most iconic leading ladies.
